Happy Birthday, General Lafayette! The French-born general who can be found immortalized in bronze on the east side of Union Square Park was born on September 6, 1757. He fought on behalf of American rebels during the American Revolution, and was a favorite of General George Washington. The statue was sculpted by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, who also designed the Statue of Liberty (1886), both of which were gifts from the French government. Let’s all celebrate the General’s birthday by picking up some fine French pastries and enjoying them in the park!
