This month The New School will officially open the doors to their new University Center on Fifth Avenue and 14th Street. The 16-story center houses design studios, laboratories, interdisciplinary classrooms and nine floors of student dorms. The building has incorporated innovative design features such as the wayfinding system created by Ruedi Baur, who created the visual identity system for the Pompidou Center in Metz, France. The building also includes active design elements created by architecture firm Owings & Merrill. Though the dormitory portion of the building welcomed students last August, the academic portion of the building opening will kick off with a week of celebratory events, which will include an Open House on Saturday, January 25th from 12:00 – 4:00 PM for students, alumni and neighbors to explore the University Center and to celebrate with performances, music, presentations and refreshments.
