Meet 50+ Chefs at Harvest in the Square

The Annual Food & Wine Festival Hosts Top Chefs from Union Square Eateries

The Union Square Cafe team including Pastry Chef Daniel Alvarez and Head Baker Justin Rosengarten at the 21st Annual Harvest in the Square.

Union Square is a hot place to spot your favorite chef. Weekly, you’ll spy a white chef’s jacket at the Union Square Greenmarket, only to confirm on Instagram later it was Chef Meir Adoni from Nur or Dominique Ansel among many others.

Get to know these masters of the culinary art at Harvest in the Square on September 14th: More than 50 local chefs will serve their signature dishes to fundraise for the Union Square Partnership’s work in the neighborhood.

Gadi Peleg of Breads Bakery and Nur is the 2017 Harvest in the Square Restaurant Chair.

Each year USP honors one neighborhood partner with the title of Restaurant Chair, and we’re thrilled to partner with Gadi Peleg for the 22nd Annual Event. Peleg opened Breads Bakery in 2013, where it has been a Union Square staple ever since. Earlier this summer we welcomed Nur, his collaboration with Israel’s Chef Meir Adoni, featuring middle eastern cuisine like you’ve never tasted before.

“Nur was opened in Union Square for many of the same reasons I selected the area when opening Breads Bakery,” said Peleg. “The neighborhood is the epicenter of the New York culinary scene, and the Greenmarket serves as the district’s heart and soul. We are thrilled to add Nur to the culinary landscape of this unique neighborhood and strive to be part of this exciting scene for years to come.” Meet both Peleg and Adoni at Harvest in the Square on September 14th.

On Monday morning, First Lady of NYC Chirlane McCray kicked off Mental Health Week of Action in Union Square to connect New Yorkers to free, confidential mental health help during the holidays. Joining her was Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives Richard Buery, as well as American Horror Story actor Denis O’Hare, who both spoke about the need for better mental health resources for those in need.

“These winter days of sparkling holiday lights and family gatherings are often joyous. But for some people – such as people who are grappling with depression, anxiety, or substance misuse – this can be such a difficult time of the year. Our mission this week is to let New Yorkers know they don’t have to bear the burden alone” –  First Lady Chirlane McCray

After speaking to New Yorkers, the First Lady, Deputy Mayor and O’Hare passed out helpful literature on how to cope with holiday stress in the Union Square Greenmarket and Union Square Holiday Market by Urbanspace.
